Presented by Salvatore J. Turchio, M.S.Ed., State Historian - Grand Lodge of New Jersey - Order Sons of Italy in America. You are cordially invited to attend an interactive PowerPoint presentation on the life and legacy of Frank Sinatra, and the cultural impact of his music, philanthropy, social activism, and patriotism at the Italian American Museum on Friday, August 7th.
Most people know Frank Sinatra for his music and films, but his legacy includes much more than that. He was a great philanthropist, patriot, and active in social causes before it became fashionable and politically correct. A proud son of Italy, Frank's early years in music and film during the depression and World War II eras actually precluded him from being too Italian. Because of Italy's involvement with Germany and Japan as Axis powers, Italians and Italian Americans had to tread lightly when it came to showcasing their national and ethnic pride.
Hence, Frank never sang in Italian, rarely ever sang Italian songs in English, and was always portrayed as an American heartthrob, star, etc., but never as an Italian American one. After all, he became famous for and was known as "The Voice," not as "La Voce." A fiercely loving and loyal son, father, and friend, Frank certainly had his faults and frailties, but his dedication to his craft and his impeccable standards have left us with an enduring legacy.
As legions of fans and admirers celebrate the 100th anniversary of Frank's birth (December 12, 1915), one life-long fan, who, like Frank's father, Antonino Martino Sinatra, was born in the province of Catania, Sicily, will offer you a brief, heart-felt tribute to the legacy of the most famous Italian American who ever lived, complete with some musical and cinematic interludes.
Friday, August 7th, 6:30 P.M. - Italian American Museum - 155 Mulberry Street (Corner of Grand and Mulberry Streets) - New York, NY 10013
