Columbus Day parade in Hamden to celebrate Italian heritage

When the Greater New Haven County Columbus Day Parade steps off Sunday at Hamden High School, it will represent more than just a celebration of Christopher Columbus, but of Italian-American traditions that are at risk of being lost, according to those taking part in the parade.

This year, it's Hamden's turn to host the parade, which rotates to different area cities and towns each year. It begins at 1 p.m. at Hamden High School and will make its way up Dixwell Avenue to Memorial Town Hall. Five Italian-American Hamden residents will lead the parade — Democratic Registrar of Voters Rose Velardi Mentone, Democratic Town Committee Chairman Lew Panzo, former Mayor John Carusone, town Recreation Supervisor Laura Luzzi and Police Commission Chairman Michael Iezzi.
