The Italian-American Heritage festival is taking place in Western Gateway Park. Attendees can enjoy Italian food, entertainment and live music. This year, a staple restaurant in the metro for 59 years, Mama Lacona's, won the award for best sauce after entering the competition for the first time. "I'm not at liberty to give any ingredients information due to the fact that it's a secret," said Joseph Wilson, of Mama Lacona's.
There's still time to try some of the winning sauce. The festival goes until 1 a.m. Sunday. Admission is $5, and part of the proceeds go toward Best Buddies Iowa, a nonprofit organization that creates one-to-one friendships with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
