Piccolo Theatre's production of "The Venetian Twins" features a madcap plot adapted by the Italian master Carlo Goldoni in 1747. Twins separated at birth turn up in Verona: one for an arranged marriage, the other to meet a girl who has run away from her family for him.
But the proverbial story behind this story is somewhat dramatic. Goldoni hoped "I Due Gemelli Veneziani" would nudge audiences away from the conventions of commedia dell'arte. That art form had been popular for roughly two centuries, but Goldoni thought drama needed more subtlety.
