Artist Sandra Place opens a new exhibit of her work, "Italy: Journeys and Inspirations," June 15 at Base Camp Coffee Bar in Sister Bay. A reception is scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. June 17 at Base Camp.

Place, a summer resident of Egg Harbor who makes her permanent home in Santa Fe, N.M., has traveled several times in northern Italy in recent years. On her visits, she spent her days hiking and exploring the natural environment, cities, art museums, food and culture of the timeless country. Favorite places, some of which inspired the paintings in this exhibit, include the Cinque Terre (a rugged, steep region with five villages along the Italian Riviera), Lake Como, the Dolomite Mountains, the cities of Venice, Bologna, Florence, and numerous small towns and countrysides. Along the way, she photographed, sketched and painted, gathering reference material for the paintings she would create after her return.
