Except for the language the crowd was speaking, the scene Sunday afternoon in Hickory Grove Park could have been a continent away in Italy. At the 84th annual Italian American Festa, red, white and green decorations and live Italian music filled the air as festivalgoers enjoyed spaghetti, lasagna and other Italian favorites.
The annual festa is a chance for Peoria's Italian-American Society to raise money for scholarships it awards to Illinois Central College and Bradley University students and the children of society members, said Rob Facker, the society's president.
