Fencing joins faith, fun and food among activities at Columbus Italian Festival

The raising of Old Glory alongside il Tricolore is a sign that the Columbus Italian Festival has begun. The sight of the American and Italian flags resonates with the festival's organizers, Landa Masdea Brunetto included, as a potent symbol of the intertwined cultures of the festival-goers. "You just feel — it gives you goosebumps," said Masdea Brunetto, a former co-chairwoman who serves as publicity director for the festival's 37th year.

Besides raising flags, the countries also enjoy crossing swords. To celebrate both countries' performances in fencing at this year's Olympics — each took home four medals, including one gold for Italy — experts will offer demonstrations of the sport for the first time this year.
