Street vendors, saints, and live outdoor music marches into the Italian Market this Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19. The market, located on South Ninth Street in Philadelphia and widely regarded as the center of the Italian-American community in the city, will be throwing its ordinarily crowded doorways and streets wide open this weekend, and inviting visitors from around the city to shop, to eat, and to participate in their annual Procession of the Saints.
The festival, which coincides with the Roman Catholic celebration of Pentecost Sunday, will see members of St. Paul's Parish carry more than twenty statues of saints, including two of the Virgin Mary, throughout the neighborhood. And it will see the crowning of a May Queen from among the young girls of the congregation.
