Agatha "Aggie" Libassi Westerhoff was working as a nurse in Washington, D.C., when she established a reputation for baking delicious traditional Italian cookies. Westerhoff embraced the popularity, though perhaps didn't expect she would be known as "The Italian Cookie Lady" years later.
"Come Christmas, all the doctors wanted my cookies," Westerhoff said of a time in her 40-year nursing career. "I used to bake only at Christmastime." Now, Westerhoff is gaining recognition in Western North Carolina as she works hard to grow her Italian Cookie Lady business, which she launched in 2011.
