St. Joseph's Day offers rich traditions in South Jersey

St. Patrick's Day celebrations overshadow the saintly observance in the Catholic religion for St. Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus and the patron saint of workers, fathers, the family and immigrants.

St. Joseph Feast Day falls on March 19, two days after St. Patrick's Day. The lesser known observance features a religious custom called St. Joseph's Table, or St. Joseph's Altar, a custom of blessing bread and fava beans that began in Sicily during the Middle Ages and eventually spread throughout Italy and Europe.
