Sons of Italy urges local support for victims of hurricane Sandy

WASHINGTON, D.C., November 5, 2012 - The Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA), the largest and longest-established organization representing men and women of Italian heritage in the United States, is encouraging its members and supporters to help the hurricane relief effort by contributing to local organizations helping victims in the areas devastated by the storm.

"The needs are immediate," said Joseph J. DiTrapani, national president. "There are still millions without power in the tri-state New York, New Jersey, Connecticut area so essential supplies are needed, as well as donations to rebuild in many areas."

This critical-need situation requires immediate attention; local groups and organizations already located in the affected areas are perhaps best prepared to handle those needs. In response, the Sons of Italy encourages volunteerism and/or donations of supplies as needed to any group assisting on the ground in the affected areas.

Those in need of information on where to volunteer or make donations, please contact your local relief organizations, government officials, or chamber of commerce for information. Additionally, some state and local governments in the hardest-hit areas have information available on their websites, for example:
State of New Jersey Hurricane Relief Resources
State of Connecticut Hurricane Relief Resources
New York City Hurricane Relief Resources

Members and supporters can also make a difference in the recovery effort by making donations to the Red Cross. Please visit the Red Cross hurricane relief website for more information.

Additionally, the Sons of Italy encourages its state and local chapters to organize, as possible, drives for the relief effort, with donations directed to local groups or the Red Cross.

Last week, DiTrapani released the following statement expressing concern for those affected by the storm:
First Lady Carol and I wish to express our heartfelt concern and best wishes to all OSIA brothers and sisters, and all fellow American citizens, who have been tragically or adversely affected by Hurricane Sandy.

On behalf of all OSIA members throughout the United States, please know that our prayers and best wishes go out to you and your families.

Wishing you all speedy recoveries and God Speed.
