Pittsburgh's 55th mayor, Richard S. Caliguiri, dedicated his life to serving Pittsburgh, helping it survive de-industrialization in the 1980s and setting it on the path for future prosperity.

Born of Italian descent in Greenfield on Oct. 20, 1931, Mr. Caliguiri began his service to Pittsburgh as the director of the city's parks and recreation department. In 1971, Pittsburgh residents elected him to city council. Two years later, he ran for mayor but lost in the Democratic primary to Peter Flaherty, who ran unopposed in the general election.
