Now and again throughout his industrious and agreeable 100 years of life, Lou Colombano would be asked where he attended college. He remarked in an interview earlier this year at his home in Healdsburg, "I always say I went to the College of Geyserville."
His education in the verdant valley town of northern Sonoma County encompassed the three years he spent in first grade because he'd walked in speaking only Italian, the Depression-era necessity that he master plowing behind a team of horses and the various lessons that came with being paid $50 a month to tend bar, clean the spittoons and bathrooms, and satisfy customers at Santi and Virginia Catelli's bar and restaurant.
