First established in 1776, the adobe walls of the Officers' Club stand testament to California's beginnings. Throughout the 20th century, the renowned Presidio Officers' Club was a gathering place for Army brass and their families. 51,000 Italian prisoners of war arrived in the United States in 1942. After Italy surrendered to the Allies, September 8, 1943, the United States refused to let the prisoners go home, wan- ting their labor instead. Some of these Italians were held at the Presidio, where the catered to the US Army. In their spare time they visited and received visits from homesick Italian Americans.
