Event Description

The Center for Italian Studies will screen five recently produced Italian films subtitled in English with remarks and Q&A sessions conducted by Festival Director, Professor Gioacchino Balducci, Stony Brook University.

All screenings are free and open to the public.

Friday, November 9:
7:00 pm: Welcome to the North (Benvenuti Al Nord) Comedy, 2012
A sequel to Welcome to the South. An Italian Southerner is sent to the North of Italy where his preconceived notions about Northerners are put to the test.

9:00 pm: What More Do I Want (Cosa Voglio Di Piu) Drama, 2010
One day at a colleague's going away party, Anna meets Domenico, a virile, slightly older chap who's married with two small kids. Passion's flames are rapidly kindled and result in steamy encounters. Using a true-to-life documentary style, Soldini has crafted a poignant film that tempers the unbridled passion of an illicit affair with the anxiety and dread of leading a double life.

Saturday, November 10:
2:00 pm: When the Night (Quando La Notte) Drama, 2012
Cristina Comencini's drama traces the hesitant romance between a young mother failing to cope and a rough-hewn mountaineer she meets on vacation in the Alps.

4:00 pm: Standing Room in Paradise (Posti in Piedi in Paradiso) Comedy, 2012
Ulysses, Fulvio and Dominic are three divorced fathers who are forced give most of the money they earn to their ex-wives and children. After a chance meeting, the three decide to move in together to split the cost of an apartment. It is the beginning of a friendship with tragicomic adventures.

6:00 pm: The Temptations of Dr. Antonio (A Fellini Short, 1962)
The Temptations of Dr. Antonio is easily one of the most entertaining offerings from his storied career. Fellini is at his most absurd and creative best here, utilizing wonderfully effective B-movie style effects that completely work since the film is very tongue-in-cheek.

7:00 pm: What Will Happen to Us? (Che Ne Sara' di Noi?) Comedy, 2009
A coming-of-age comic tale about three eighteen-year-olds just out of high school who go to a Greek island following one of the boys' older girlfriend.
