Yesterday at the Italian Cultural Institute, was the official unveiling of the Treasures from Naples' Teatro di San Carlo, a stunning collection of rare stage costumes, jewels, tapestries, and other treasures, whose provenance spans the last 250 years of Teatro di San Carlo's rich history. The auction of these items at the June 15th Gala Dinner and Auction at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco will provide support to unite the Teatro di San Carlo and San Francisco Opera for the Concert of the Two Bays on October 25th at the War Memorial Opera House. Amazingly, this concert would happen on Verdi's 200th birthday.
Those gathered at yesterday's unveiling of the auction items were treated to a video message from the Honorable Luigi de Magistris, Mayor of Naples, (see below) as well as live video remarks made by Rosanna Purchia, Superintendent of Teatro di San Carlo. Director of the San Francisco Opera David Gockley was also at the event, along with Maurizio Maddaloni, President of the Naples Chamber of Commerce.
