January 17 is World Pizza Day, a global celebration of one of Italy’s most iconic foods. In Italy, pizza is not just a popular dish. It is a culinary symbol deeply rooted in everyday life, cultural identity, and social tradition. From small towns to big cities, Italians celebrate this day by eating pizza at home, in pizzerias, and at events that highlight the craft and history behind the pizza we all know and love.

Pizza has been embraced around the world, yet its birthplace still holds a unique place in how the food is prepared and enjoyed. In Italy, the pizza sector is a significant economic engine. The industry’s annual revenue is around €15 billion, and it supports more than 300,000 workers across the country. There are over 50,000 pizzerias in Italy, and each day these establishments collectively bake around 8 million pizzas.
