Washington celebrates Constantino Brumidi, the Italian artist who transformed the U.S. Capitol

The remarkable story of Italian-born artist Constantino Brumidi returned to the spotlight in Washington, D.C., on October 20, when the Italian Embassy hosted the premiere of American Michelangelo – Finding Constantino Brumidi.

Directed by Italian journalist and filmmaker Antonella Ciancio, a former Reuters and RAI correspondent, the documentary celebrates the painter whose magnificent frescoes transformed the United States Capitol into an artistic landmark. The screening was part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Born in Rome in 1805, Brumidi moved to the United States in 1852 and began decorating the Capitol in 1855. His most celebrated masterpiece, The Apotheosis of Washington, was completed in 1865. Covering 4,664 square feet inside the Rotunda, the fresco remains among the most recognizable works of art in the nation's capital.

Through previously unseen Capitol footage and interviews with art historians and curators, the film connects Brumidi's American achievements to earlier projects in Rome, including the Villa Torlonia Theater and the Chapel of the Madonna dell'Archetto.

Italian Ambassador Marco Peronaci opened the event alongside Robert Allegrini, president of the National Italian American Foundation. The project also received support from the White House Historical Association and the Italian Cultural Society of Washington.

A discussion followed with Ciancio, former Capitol curator Barbara Wolanin, and journalist Molly McCluskey.

More than 140 years after Brumidi's death in 1880, his art continues to embody the enduring cultural exchange between Italy and America – a fitting tribute during the United States' historic anniversary year for future generations.
