Transhumance is not only an Abruzzo tradition

By: Teresa Di Fresco

"September, let us go. It is time to migrate./ Now in the land of Abruzzo my shepherds/ leave their mountain pens and head toward the sea:/ they descend to the wild Adriatic/ green like the mountain pastures.”

These lines open The Shepherds, the famous poem Gabriele D’Annunzio included in Alcyone in 1903. Nature certainly plays its part in the text, but nostalgia is what truly emerges from the verses of the Vate, one of the leading figures of European decadence and aestheticism.
