The United States has given the green light for a major arms deal that would provide Italy with a new supply of advanced air-to-surface missiles valued at about 301 million dollars. The planned transfer involves 100 long-range precision missiles designed to strengthen Italy’s ability to respond to emerging security challenges.
Along with the missiles themselves, the package includes training, technical assistance, and the equipment needed to integrate the system into Italy’s existing military platforms.
Washington’s authorization came after a formal request from Rome, which aims to enhance the capabilities of its air force as part of a broader modernization effort. The missiles are compatible with several aircraft currently in service, including the latest generation of fighter jets, and would give Italy a more robust deterrence posture. U.S. officials emphasized that the proposed sale aligns with the strategic interests of both countries, noting that Italy remains a key partner in efforts to maintain stability across Europe and the Mediterranean.
The approval process requires notifying Congress, which has a set period to review the transaction. While such deals are often routine between allied nations, they also signal political confidence and ongoing cooperation in defense matters. In this case, the United States highlighted that boosting Italy’s long-range strike capabilities contributes to collective security within NATO – particularly at a time when member states are being encouraged to invest more in defense readiness.
Italian authorities view the acquisition as an important upgrade that will allow their air force to conduct operations with greater precision and flexibility. The system’s extended range provides the capacity to engage targets from safer distances, reducing exposure to hostile defenses. Military planners argue that this kind of capability is increasingly important in modern conflict scenarios, where air forces must be able to operate effectively in contested environments.
If finalized, the deal will strengthen logistical and industrial ties between the two countries as well, since U.S. manufacturers will provide ongoing support and maintenance. The transaction underscores the long-standing defense relationship between Italy and the United States, reaffirming their shared commitment to coordinated security efforts and technological compatibility across their armed forces.
