The ‘Secret’ Italian Riviera Resort Town Waiting To Be Discovered

By: Catherine Sabino

“Hiding in plain view” may be an appropriate way to describe Nervi, an exquisite Italian Riviera resort about seven kilometers from Genoa. Most people only catch glimpses of it as they whizz pass on a Regionale heading to better-known coastal stops like Santa Margherita Ligure or the now exhaustingly popular Cinque Terre.

When I’ve mentioned Nervi, many Italian and even my most well-traveled American friends have had only a vague notion of where it was, if they had any idea of it at all. And for many years I was equally in the dark and thought of it as just one of Genoa’s many train stops. (Formerly an independent village, Nervi became a district of Genoa in 1926.) Although it may be best known among locals and Italian cognoscenti, Ernest Hemingway came to Nervi in the 1950s.
