The Myth of Scylla – The Legendary Sea Monster of the Strait of Messina

The myth of Scylla is one of the oldest and most famous stories connected to the waters between Calabria and Sicily. In ancient Greek mythology, Scylla was a terrifying sea monster associated with the narrow and dangerous Strait of Messina, the channel separating the two Italian regions.

Together with Charybdis, another legendary monster located on the opposite side of the strait, Scylla represented one of the greatest maritime dangers of the ancient world. The story combines mythology, geography, literature, and local tradition. Ancient sailors feared the strong currents and whirlpools of the Strait of Messina, and Greek poets transformed those dangers into mythical creatures.
