In a significant move, the Italian Parliament has approved legislation requiring that all new laws evaluate their social and environmental consequences for the adults of tomorrow. For the first time, intergenerational fairness becomes a guiding principle written into law.
Under the new measure, every proposal must undergo a “Generational Impact Assessment” that examines not only how young people will be affected but also how future generations might fare. This rule stems from a 2022 constitutional amendment that revised Article 9, declaring that the Republic “protects the environment, biodiversity, and ecosystems, even in the interest of future generations.”
