President Donald Trump signed a proclamation once again declaring the second Monday in October as Christopher Columbus Day. It’s the latest development surrounding a day that’s sparked controversy across the country. Back in 2021, President Joe Biden recognized it as both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day.
The controversy has led many cities across the country, including the largest city named after the explorer, Columbus, Ohio, to remove their Christopher Columbus statues. In Columbus, the statue has been sitting in storage while local leaders decide what to do with it. But people on both sides of the issue say it’s time for a permanent solution.
