Sicily’s tourism transformation: visitor nights nearly quintuple in six decades

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Sicily has undergone one of the most striking tourism transformations in Italy over the past six decades, evolving from a relatively secondary destination in the early years of mass tourism into an increasingly international Mediterranean powerhouse.

According to historical tourism data compiled by Italy’s national statistics agency, overnight stays in Sicily rose from approximately 4.42 million in 1962 to 20.98 million in 2025. That represents an increase of roughly 375% – meaning the total is now almost five times what it was at the beginning of the period. Sicily’s share of all Italian tourism nights also increased significantly, from about 2.7% in 1962 to 4.4% in 2025.
