Sicily has taken another major step toward becoming one of the Mediterranean’s most important renewable-energy centers with the launch of the largest photovoltaic plant currently operating in Italy. The Fénix solar facility, developed by Iberdrola, stretches across the municipalities of Centuripe, Paternò and Belpasso, between the provinces of Enna and Catania.
The scale of the project is remarkable. Fénix has an installed capacity of 243 MW and uses 413,236 bifacial photovoltaic modules, which can capture sunlight on both sides of each panel. The facility is expected to generate approximately 400 GWh of renewable electricity every year – enough to match the annual consumption of more than 140,000 homes.
