When you think about the big bad boy reds of Italy, what comes to your mind? Barolo, Barbaresco, Vino Noble di Montepulciano, Brunello di Montalcino or Super Tuscan reds. Well, I just discovered another one that fits into that club...Sagrantino. Thanks to my friends out of New York who sent me three Sagrantino to try, I have now found a new Italian red to seek out.
Sagrantino is an ancient vine of Umbria, brought there, according to certain historians, by followers of St. Francis of Assisi in the Middle Ages. The first mention of the cultivation of the Sagrantino grape dates back to 1549 in Montefalco.
