Rome Fiumicino Airport is preparing for a new era of expansion after surpassing 50 million annual passengers for the first time in its history.
According to official figures, Leonardo da Vinci Airport handled 51.3 million travelers in 2025, including transit passengers. That represented a 4% increase over 2024 and an 18% rise compared with 2019, when traffic totaled approximately 43 million. Fiumicino also accounted for 22% of all passengers using Italian airports in 2025.
Aeroporti di Roma CEO Marco Troncone expects the airport to reach approximately 53 million passengers in 2026. Looking further ahead, the company forecasts that annual traffic could approach 100 million by 2046.
To accommodate that growth, Aeroporti di Roma has developed a €9 billion investment program that will be financed without public funding. Approximately €4 billion will be used to maintain and modernize existing facilities, while €5 billion will finance new infrastructure.
The long-term development plan includes a fourth runway, a new passenger terminal, expanded aircraft aprons, upgraded access routes and additional operational facilities. Environmental measures are also planned to reduce noise and protect the Roman Coast State Nature Reserve surrounding the airport.
Fiumicino already connects Rome with more than 240 destinations across five continents and about 80 countries, with services operated by approximately 100 airlines. Long-haul traffic alone reached 10.8 million passengers in 2025.
The ambitious expansion is designed to consolidate Fiumicino’s position as a major global hub while strengthening Rome’s role as an international gateway for tourism, business and trade.
