Pellegrino Matarazzo, the Italian American who could lead the US national soccer team

Pellegrino Matarazzo is rewriting the narrative of American coaching in Europe, and his Italian heritage is central to that story. Born in Wayne, New Jersey, in 1977, he is the son of Italian immigrants – with roots in Irpinia and Cilento – and grew up in a deeply Italian American household where soccer culture and identity were tightly connected.

At 48, Matarazzo has now made history by leading Real Sociedad to the 2026 Copa del Rey, defeating Atlético Madrid on penalties and delivering the club’s fourth title in the competition. This achievement is more than a trophy: it marks him as the first Italian American coach to win a major domestic title in one of Europe’s top leagues, a milestone that highlights the growing impact of Italian American figures in global soccer.

His path has been unconventional. A Columbia University graduate in applied mathematics, Matarazzo built his career in Germany before arriving in Spain in December 2025, when Real Sociedad was struggling near 16th place. In just a few months, he transformed the team into a contender, reaching the Copa final and climbing toward European qualification.

This rapid rise has fueled speculation about his future – especially with the U.S. Men’s National Team. Several analysts and media outlets now see him as a leading candidate to eventually replace Mauricio Pochettino, particularly after inconsistent results and with the 2026 World Cup approaching.

Matarazzo represents a unique bridge between cultures: American by birth, Italian by heritage, and European by professional formation. That blend – combined with tangible results – could make him the ideal figure to lead the United States into its next era, bringing both identity and international credibility to the program.
