Open house 2026: Amici house and the living architecture of Little Italy in San Diego

By: Raphael Umphres-Piscitelli

San Diego’s architectural heritage comes into focus once again with OH! San Diego 2026, taking place on Saturday, March 7th. Hosted by the San Diego Architectural Foundation, this annual open-house event invites the public to step inside significant buildings across the city, offering a rare opportunity to experience the spaces that shape San Diego’s identity.

In Little Italy, visitors are welcomed into the historic Amici House on Date Street, home of the Convivio Society and AmiciBar. Originally part of the neighborhood’s early immigrant fabric, Amici House reflects the modest, human-scaled architecture that defined Little Italy’s fishing community. Today, it continues to serve its original purpose: bringing people together.

Carefully preserved and thoughtfully activated, Amici House now functions as a cultural center and café rooted in the Italian tradition of hospitality. Guests will experience how architecture can encourage community: supporting conversation, cultural exchange, and connection across generations.

As part of OH! San Diego 2026, Amici House stands as a powerful reminder that architecture is more than structure. Architecture represents our memories, and the continuity of our shared life. The doors of the Amici House remain open not only as a historic landmark, but as a living home where San Diego’s cultural story continues to be built.
