A significant change is creating new opportunities for Italians residing abroad, including the large community living in the United States. Beginning June 1, 2026, Italians registered with AIRE can apply for an Electronic Identity Card (CIE) directly through any Italian municipality while visiting Italy, thanks to provisions introduced by Law 11/2026.
The new system gives Italian citizens abroad greater flexibility when obtaining one of the country’s most important identification documents. Appointments can be booked through the national “Agenda CIE” platform or through procedures established by individual municipalities. During the appointment, municipal offices will verify personal data, collect photographs and signatures, and, when required, record fingerprints.
One of the most important advantages is that the document can be delivered either to an address in Italy or directly to the applicant’s country of residence. For Italians living in the United States, this eliminates the need for additional trips or lengthy administrative procedures after the initial application.
The CIE offers benefits that go beyond identification. It includes integrated digital identity credentials that allow access to a growing number of Italian public services online. As Italy continues to expand digital government services, this feature is becoming increasingly valuable for citizens who manage administrative matters from overseas.
The card is also less expensive than a passport and can serve as a practical additional identity document. For Italian families in the United States, particularly those with dual-citizen children, having both a passport and a CIE can reduce complications caused by passport renewal delays and provide greater flexibility when dealing with Italian institutions.
For the millions of Italians and Italian Americans who maintain ties with Italy, the new rules represent another step toward making cross-border citizenship easier, faster, and more accessible in an increasingly digital world.
