L'Aquila, Italy's Capital of Culture for 2026, is preparing to showcase its heritage in Philadelphia through four days of cultural events, culinary experiences, and diplomatic meetings from October 21 to 24.
Mayor Pierluigi Biondi will lead the Italian delegation, with a meeting scheduled for October 23 at Philadelphia City Hall with Mayor Cherelle Parker. The visit aims to strengthen relationships between the two cities and establish opportunities for continued cultural cooperation.
The initiative is organized by Gran Caffè L'Aquila in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in Philadelphia.
The city's Italian American community provides a natural connection with Abruzzo. According to figures reported by L'Aquila's municipal administration, approximately 10,000 Italian citizens are registered with AIRE in the Philadelphia area, including around 4,000 with Abruzzese origins.
The program begins October 21 with an evening attended by Italian diplomatic representatives. The first two days will highlight Abruzzo's culinary specialties and traditional craftsmanship.
On October 23, author Angelo De Nicola will present his book exploring the first Jubilee and the Perdonanza Celestiniana, L'Aquila's historic religious celebration, with remarks from Mayor Biondi.
The festivities conclude October 24 with "Dolce vita all'Aquila," an event celebrating local gastronomic traditions, hosted by De Nicola and Marco Signori, editor of the publication Virtù Quotidiane.
For L'Aquila, the Philadelphia initiative represents more than an international promotional opportunity. It offers a chance to transform the visibility gained through its 2026 cultural designation into lasting connections with the United States and its Italian American communities.
