Italy's commitment to separating household waste is producing measurable results, with growing participation across the country and increasingly widespread local initiatives designed to reduce waste. New figures published on October 7, 2026, by national statistics agency ISTAT highlight a transformation in everyday environmental behavior.
In 2024, 67.7% of Italy's municipal waste was collected separately, up about one percentage point from 2023. This exceeded the national target of 65%, which Italy first surpassed in 2022. Since 2010, the share has risen by 32.4 percentage points, nearly doubling.
