Air quality in Italy’s major cities showed encouraging signs of progress in 2025, with significantly fewer urban areas exceeding pollution limits compared to recent years.

According to the latest annual assessment on urban smog, only 13 provincial capitals surpassed the legal daily limit for PM10 – fine particulate matter – a sharp drop from 25 cities in 2024 and 29 in 2022. It is one of the strongest improvements recorded in the past decade.
