Italy’s overlooked gas reserve could reach 15 bcm by 2050

Italy’s energy debate often jumps from LNG terminals and pipelines to solar, wind, and batteries. But one of the country’s most underused assets lies much closer to the ground – in manure, crop residues, agro-industrial byproducts, and municipal organic waste.

If Italy can turn that messy feedstock into industrial-scale biomethane and renewable gas, it would not just trim emissions. It would reduce import dependence, strengthen rural incomes, and give hard-to-electrify sectors a practical decarbonization option.
