Italy’s nonprofit sector is not only expanding in size, but also increasing its capacity to create social connections, support vulnerable populations, and strengthen local communities. The latest findings from ISTAT’s Permanent Census of Nonprofit Institutions paint a picture of a sector that continues to evolve while playing an increasingly important role in Italian society.

According to the data, Italy counted more than 360,000 active nonprofit organizations in recent years, making the country’s third sector one of the largest and most diverse in Europe. These organizations employ well over 900,000 people and engage millions of volunteers, creating a vast network of civic participation that reaches every corner of the country.
