The art of walking is something that Italy plans to revive through the preservation and development of important roads in the country's history. First and foremost, the focus will be on the Appian Way, dubbed in the 1st century AD by Roman poet Publius Papinius Statius "Regina Viarum."
The "queen of the roads" connected Rome to Brindisi, the Adriatic's harbor to the Eastern Mediterranean, spanning along 360 miles. The original route was designed starting from 312 BC by Roman censor Appius Claudius Caecus (hence the road's name) and led to Capua; it was later extended to Brindisi.
