Bioplastics are often presented as a green solution to plastic pollution, but the reality is far more complex. In Italy, where compostable packaging has become widespread thanks to national waste collection systems, scientists are taking a closer look at what actually lies behind the “bio” label.
Their findings suggest that not all products marketed as compostable truly meet environmental standards – and Italian research is now playing a key role in uncovering the problem.
