Italy builds a new energy storage future from Alpine water to southern batteries

Italy is advancing energy storage on 2 very different fronts – combining an existing hydroelectric plant with a lithium battery in Lombardy while building a major battery manufacturing hub at a former industrial site in Brindisi.

At the Dossi hydroelectric plant in Valbondione, near Bergamo, Enel has inaugurated BESS4HYDRO, described as Europe’s first project to operate a reservoir-based hydroelectric facility and a battery as a single unit on the electricity market.
