Italy beats Mexico 9–1 in World Baseball Classic, sending both Italy and team USA to the quarterfinals

Italy delivered one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 World Baseball Classic, defeating Mexico 9–1 and finishing the group stage with a perfect 4–0 record in Pool B. The victory secured first place for the Italian national team and guaranteed a spot in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

The game was played at Daikin Park in Houston and quickly turned in Italy’s favor. Captain Vinnie Pasquantino led the offense with a historic performance, hitting three home runs – the first time a player has accomplished that in a World Baseball Classic game. Italy’s pitching staff also played a key role: starter Aaron Nola delivered five scoreless innings, shutting down the Mexican lineup and giving the Italian hitters time to build a decisive lead.

By the middle innings the contest was already under control for the Azzurri. Mexico struggled offensively and could not respond to Italy’s powerful batting and solid pitching. The final 9–1 score reflected Italy’s dominance in all aspects of the game and confirmed the team as one of the surprises of the tournament.

This victory also had a major impact on the standings in Pool B. Thanks to Italy’s win, the United States advanced to the quarterfinals as well. After suffering an unexpected 8–6 loss to Italy earlier in the group stage, Team USA needed the Italians to defeat Mexico in the final game of the pool. When Italy secured the win, the Americans finished with a 3–1 record and moved on to the knockout round.

Italy’s impressive run included victories against several opponents during the group stage, confirming the growth of the country’s baseball program and the strength of a roster that mixes Italian-born players with Italian American talent. With a 4–0 record and strong offensive numbers, the team now heads to the quarterfinals full of confidence.

In the next round Italy will face Puerto Rico, while the United States prepares for a quarterfinal matchup against Canada. Both teams advance from Pool B, but it was Italy’s decisive victory over Mexico that ultimately allowed the Americans to continue their World Baseball Classic campaign.
