After suffering an unexpected 8–6 loss to Italy earlier in the group stage, Team USA needed the Italians to defeat Mexico in the final game of the pool. When Italy secured the win, the Americans finished with a 3–1 record and moved on to the knockout round.
Italy’s impressive run included victories against several opponents during the group stage, confirming the growth of the country’s baseball program and the strength of a roster that mixes Italian-born players with Italian American talent.
