At the Liceo Scientifico Cavour, a public high school a short walk from the Colosseum in Rome, the rumor had been around for a long time: there were hidden rooms beneath the gym. According to Archaeology Magazine, some students eventually ventured into underground passages on the school grounds and found chambers and corridors.
They told their history and Latin teacher, Claudia Marino, who reported the find to Rome’s archaeological authorities. Excavations began in January 2026, and the results were presented to the public on May 28, Live Science reports. The work was carried out by the Special Superintendency of Rome, the state body in charge of the city’s archaeological heritage.
