Italian cuisine earns high marks from travelers in the US despite imitation concerns

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Italian cuisine continues to strengthen its reputation in the United States, with new survey data showing that 69% of Italian travelers who have dined at Italian restaurants across America rate the experience as positive or at least satisfactory.

The findings, released during the 2026 Summer Fancy Food Show in New York, highlight the enduring appeal of authentic Italian food even as the industry continues to battle imitation products and misleading "Italian sounding" offerings.

According to the survey, 11% of respondents described the quality of Italian food served in the U.S. as excellent, while 28% rated it good and 30% considered it satisfactory. On the other hand, 21% judged their experience to be poor and 5% very poor, with another 5% choosing not to express an opinion. The results suggest that while most visitors appreciate Italian cuisine in America, consistency and authenticity remain important challenges.

The research was presented during the 70th edition of the Summer Fancy Food Show, North America's largest specialty food exhibition, held at the Javits Center in New York. More than 300 Italian companies participated, making Italy the largest international exhibitor at the event. Producers showcased a broad range of products, including pasta, cheeses, cured meats, olive oil, wine, sauces, baked goods, and regional specialties, while hosting tastings, cooking demonstrations, and educational masterclasses.

One of the industry's biggest concerns remains the widespread availability of imitation Italian foods in the American market. Products marketed with Italian names, colors, or imagery often contain ingredients or recipes that differ significantly from authentic Italian standards. Industry organizations argue that these imitations create confusion among consumers and reduce opportunities for genuine Made in Italy producers.

Even so, demand for authentic Italian food continues to grow in the United States. The survey suggests that visitors recognize and appreciate high-quality Italian cuisine when it is prepared with traditional recipes and genuine ingredients. For Italian producers, restaurants, and exporters, the strong approval ratings provide further evidence that authenticity remains one of Italy's greatest competitive advantages in the world's largest specialty food market.
