Italian artisan economy: tradition, innovation, and the future of Made in Italy

Italy’s artisan sector remains one of the strongest pillars of the country’s economy, combining tradition, innovation, and global competitiveness. Recent data confirm the scale of this system: about 1.25 million businesses in Italy are classified as artisan enterprises, representing roughly 21.3% of all companies nationwide.

These firms are not marginal players – they form the backbone of Italian manufacturing. In fact, artisan businesses account for about 58.5% of companies in the manufacturing sector, highlighting their central role in producing what is globally recognized as Made in Italy excellence.
