Italian American traditions honor St. Joseph across Louisiana

A hearty helping of Italian American spirit was served across Louisiana in celebrations rooted in faith, as Catholics marked the feast of St. Joseph. From his role as a humble carpenter to the father figure of Christ, the many facets of the biblical figure were honored in communities statewide.

In New Orleans, the St. Joseph Society presented its maids and queen ahead of next week’s Italian American parade, which will bring music, festivities and traditional throws to the streets. In Shreveport, smaller but equally meaningful gatherings took place. At St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish Saturday, a priest led prayers invoking the saints as intercessors, while community members reflected on the significance of the day.
