Italy’s digital transformation is entering a decisive new phase as IT Wallet moves from an experimental service to a central component of the country’s public administration. The system, integrated into the government’s IO app, is designed to allow citizens to carry legally recognized digital versions of an expanding range of documents and credentials directly on their smartphones.
IT Wallet was launched experimentally in 2024 and has already attracted more than 10 million users. Italians have added approximately 17.3 million digital documents to the platform. Until now, the main credentials available have been the driver’s license, national health insurance card and European Disability Card. The scale of the project is now set to increase dramatically.
