Mathematics is often associated with classrooms, research laboratories, and academic theory. Yet a new study shows that its impact extends far beyond education, playing a crucial role in the strength and competitiveness of Italy’s economy.
According to research conducted by Deloitte Economics for the National Research Council’s Institute for Applied Computing (CNR-IAC) and the Italian Mathematical Union (UMI), mathematics contributed 34% of Italy’s Gross Value Added in 2025, generating €680.1 billion in economic value.
