High-speed satellite internet on ITA Airways starting 2026

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Starting in 2026, ITA Airways is set to introduce a new generation of onboard connectivity that will significantly change the passenger experience on its flights. As part of a broader strategy within the Lufthansa Group, the Italian carrier will equip its aircraft with high-speed satellite internet powered by Starlink, bringing reliable broadband access to cruising altitude.

For ITA Airways, the upgrade represents a clear step forward in service quality and digital competitiveness. Passengers will be able to browse the web, send messages, stream video content, and work online throughout the flight, including on long-haul routes. The system is designed to deliver speeds comparable to those available on the ground, reducing latency and improving stability compared to traditional inflight Wi-Fi solutions.

The rollout will take place gradually between 2026 and 2029 and will involve hundreds of aircraft across the Lufthansa Group network. ITA Airways, now fully integrated into the group’s operational framework, will benefit from the same connectivity standards adopted by other major European carriers. The goal is to offer a consistent digital experience across fleets, regardless of the airline brand or route.

From a passenger perspective, the introduction of satellite internet transforms how time is spent onboard. Business travelers can participate in video calls, access cloud-based tools, and manage emails in real time, while leisure travelers can stream entertainment or stay connected on social platforms. For frequent flyers, the service is expected to be included as part of loyalty program benefits, reinforcing its role as a value-added feature rather than a premium extra.

For ITA Airways, the move is also strategic in terms of brand positioning. As Italy’s national carrier seeks to strengthen its presence on intercontinental routes, modern connectivity becomes a key differentiator. The adoption of Starlink technology aligns the airline with the most advanced players in global aviation and signals a commitment to innovation and passenger comfort.

More broadly, the project reflects how airline services are evolving. Connectivity is no longer seen as a secondary amenity but as an essential part of the travel experience. With the introduction of satellite broadband, ITA Airways positions itself at the forefront of this shift, offering passengers a more connected, productive, and modern way to fly.
