Italy is rolling out a new set of policies in 2026 aimed at reversing decades of population loss in its mountain regions. These areas make up close to 40% of the country’s total territory, yet they are home to less than 15% of the population.
Many villages have lost schools, services, and jobs as younger residents moved to cities. The new strategy combines environmental goals with fiscal incentives, betting that lower taxes and targeted support can make life in the mountains not just possible, but appealing.
