Genovese basil dop marks 20 years of growth and identity

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Genovese Basil DOP is celebrating two decades since receiving its protected designation in 2005, a milestone that highlights both tradition and economic expansion. Over these 20 years, the sector has evolved from a niche local production into a structured supply chain closely tied to Liguria’s identity and global food culture.

The numbers show a steady rise. Certified production increased from about 14,175 quintals in 2006 to 71,610 quintals in 2025 – a fivefold jump that reflects stronger demand and improved organization across the industry. At the same time, the fresh market has expanded significantly, now reaching around 60 million packaged plants each year, sold as small bunches or larger bouquets.

This growth has been supported by strict production rules linked to the DOP label, which guarantees origin, traceability, and quality standards at 100%. Cultivation remains limited to Liguria’s coastal areas, where climate conditions – including sea breezes and mild temperatures – create a product with a distinctive aroma and no minty aftertaste.

Beyond agriculture, basil has become a symbol of regional culture and a key ingredient in pesto, one of Italy’s most recognized recipes worldwide. The supply chain now connects farmers, processors, and distributors, generating value across multiple sectors.

Today, the 20-year anniversary is not just a celebration but a reflection on future challenges. Producers are focusing on sustainability, innovation, and maintaining high quality standards while meeting rising global demand. The goal is to continue expanding production while preserving the unique characteristics that define this iconic Italian product.
