From Cremona to America: 190 years of sweetness and ambition for Sperlari

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

A small confectionery shop opened in Cremona in 1836 has become an international business with a particularly interesting American connection. Sperlari, celebrating its 190th anniversary in 2026, has carried Italian confectionery traditions across generations, borders and changing consumer tastes.

Founder Enea Sperlari began by selling torrone, the traditional Italian nougat, and mostarda. His specialties eventually reached Italian immigrant communities in the United States, where familiar flavors helped preserve connections with their homeland.

The American relationship later became industrial. In 1993, U.S. chocolate giant Hershey acquired Sperlari in a transaction valued at approximately $120 million, using the Italian company to strengthen its European presence.

Another milestone came in 2020, when Sperlari announced plans for a U.S. subsidiary and introduced Cremonelli, a product range designed specifically for American consumers.

Today, Sperlari belongs to Germany's Katjes International, which acquired it in 2017, while management and manufacturing remain in Italy.

The group generates approximately €150 million in annual revenue, with international markets accounting for 20%. Its five Italian factories produce around 20,000 metric tons annually, employing more than 400 permanent workers.

North America remains part of Sperlari's international distribution network. Future expansion emphasizes traditional Italian holiday specialties, particularly Paluani panettone and pandoro, alongside innovations such as convenient nougat snacks.

With 38.2% of Italy's modern-retail nougat market, Sperlari combines a remarkable heritage with new ambitions – bringing another taste of Italian tradition to American consumers.
